Father's Day
Father's Day
The First Father’s Day
Sonora Dodd, of Washington, was one of the first people who had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.
Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself, on a rural farm in eastern Washington state.
After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
Even before Dodd, however, the idea of observing a day in honor of fathers was promoted. Dr. Robert Webb conducted what is believed as the first Father's Day service at the Central Church of Fairmont, West Virginia in 1908. It was Dodd's efforts, however, that eventually led to a national observance.
President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day
Father's Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all to be honored on Father's Day.
Happy Father's Day
A Dad is a person who is loving and kind And often he knows what you have on your mind. He's someone who listens, suggests, and defends. A dad can be one of your very best friends! He's proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong A dad can be patient and helpful and strong In all that you do, a dad's love plays a part. There's always a place for him deep in your heart. And each year that passes, you're even more glad More grateful and proud just to call him your dad! Thank you, Dad... for listening and caring for giving and sharing, but, especially, for just being you!
Happy Father's Day!
It is so easy to forget to tell people how important they are to us, especially our parents.
On Father's Day if you are lucky enough to still have your dad around, then go and see him. Tell him how much you love and appreciate him. And if you can, put your arms around him, give him a kiss on the cheek, and let him know that he is the most important man in your life.
WHAT MAKES A DAD
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad
Fields of Blessings on Father's Day
Father’s Day we take the time
To turn our thoughts to dad
Thank him for the home he gave
For all the things we had.
We think about the fleeting years
Too quickly, gone for good
It seems like only yesterday
I’d go back if I could.
A time when dad was always there
No matter what the weather
Always strong when things went wrong
He held our lives together.
He strived so hard from day to day
And never once complained
With steady hands, he worked the land
And kept the family name.
He taught us that hard work pays off
You reap just what you sow
He said that if you tend your crops
Your field will overflow.
My harvest has been bountiful
He taught me how to give
In his firm and steadfast way
He taught me how to live.
Dad dwells among the angels now
He left us much too soon
He glides across a golden field
Above the harvest moon.
I see him in the fields of grain
He rides upon the wind
And when my path is beaten down
He picks me up again.

"None of you can ever be proud enough of being the child of SUCH a Father who has not his equal in this world-so great, so good, so faultless. Try, all of you, to follow in his footsteps and don't be discouraged, for to be really in everything like him none of you, I am sure, will ever be. Try, therefore, to be like him in some points, and you will have acquired a great deal." -- Victoria, Queen of England

The things you taught me
The things you taught me I will always know.
How could I not? The roots have sunk so deep:
All lessons of the heart that I will keep
No matter who I am or where I go.
Kids learn from what their parents are, and so
You are my book of life, the thoughts I reap;
Only in your arms I quiet sleep;
Under my words your voice sings soft and slow.
From you I learned the rules of right and wrong
Against which I at times had to rebel,
Though with regret I carry with me still.
How lucky I am to have been loved so well,
Even as I pushed against your will,
Relying on a father fair and strong
The Little Chap Who Follows Me
A careful man I ought to be,
A little fellow follows me,
I do not dare to go astray
For fear he'll go the selfsame way.
I cannot once escape his eyes,
Whate'er he sees me do, he tries;
Like me, he says, he's going to be,
The little chap who follows me.
He thinks that I am good and fine,
Believes in every word of mine
The base in me he must not see,
The little chap who follows me.
I must remember as I go,
Through summer's fun and winter's snow,
In building for the years to be
The little chap who follows me!
That's My Daddy
A little girl was once standing on the edge of a crowd while her daddy was giving a testimony about what Jesus Christ had done in his life. He was testifying how the Lord had saved and delivered him from his old lifestyle as a drunkard.
There was a cynic standing on the edge of the crowd that day who could not bear to hear anymore of this religious nonsense. So he yelled, "Why don't you just shut up and sit down, old man. You're just dreaming".
Soon, this skeptic felt a tug on his coat sleeve. He looked down and it was this little girl. She looked him square in the eyes and said, "Sir, that's my daddy you're talking about. You say that my daddy is a dreamer? Let me tell you about my daddy. My daddy used to be a drunkard and would come home at night and beat my mother. She would cry all night long. And mister, we didn't have good clothes to wear because my daddy would spend all his money on whiskey. Sometimes I didn't even have shoes to wear to school. But look at these shoes and look at my new dress! My daddy has a good job now".
Then pointing across the way, she said, "Do you see that woman smiling over there? That's my mother! She doesn't cry through the night anymore. Now she sings". Then the knockout punch. She said, "Jesus has changed my daddy. Jesus has changed our home. Mister, if my daddy is dreaming, then please don't wake him up".

Please Daddy, Let's Go
A little girl with shining eyes,
Her upturned face aglow,
Said, "Daddy, it's almost time
For Sunday School, you know;
Let's go and hear of Jesus' love
Of how He died for all,
To take them to His home aboveWho on His name will call."
"Oh no," said Daddy, "Not to-day;
I've worked hard all the week;
And I must have one day of rest,
And fishing's find they say;
So run along, don't bother me,
We'll go ANOTHER day."
Months and years have passed away,
But Daddy hears that plea no more--
"Let's go to Sunday School..."
Those childish days are o'er.
And now that Daddy's growing old,
And life is almost through,
He finds some time to go to church,
BUT, what does daughter do?
She says, "Oh, daddy, not to-day.
Was out almost all night;
I've got to get a little sleep:
Besides, I look a fright."
Then daddy lifts a trembling hand
To brush away the tears;
Again he hears that pleading voice,
Distinctly through the years,
He sees a small girl's upturned face,
Upturned with eyes aglow,
Saying, "It's time for Sunday School.
Please, daddy, won't you go?"

Things Dad Says...
Don't ask me, ask your mother.
Were you raised in a barn? Close the door.
You didn't beat me. I let you win.
Big boys don't cry.
Don't worry. It's only blood.
Don't you know any normal boys?
Now you listen to ME, Buster!
I'll play catch after I read the paper.
Coffee will stunt your growth.
A little dirt never hurt anyone--just wipe it off..
Get your elbows off the table.
I told you, keep your eye on the ball.
Who said life was supposed to be fair?
The fair's in October.
Always say please and thank you. That way, you get more.
If you forget, you'll be grounded till the end of the world.
You call that a haircut?
"Hey" is for horses.
This will hurt me a lot more than it hurts you.
Turn off those lights. Do you think I am made of money?
Don't give me any of your lip, young lady.
You call that noise "music"?
We're not lost. I'm just not sure where we are.
No, we're not there yet.
Shake it off. It's only pain.
When I was your age, I treated MY father with respect.
As long as you live under my roof, you'll live by my rules.
I'll tell you why. Because I said so. That's why.
Do what I say, not what I do.
Sit up straight, knucklehead!
So you think you're smart, do you?
What's so funny? Wipe that smile off your face.
Young ladies perspire, they do not sweat.
If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times
You want something to do? I'll give you something to do.
You should visit more often. Your mother worries.
This is your last warning.
.
I'm not sleeping, I was watching that channel.
What keeps those jeans of yours from falling off?
I'm not just talking to hear my own voice!
A little pain never hurt anybody.
I knew how to cook when I was your age, young lady!
Don't take yourself so seriously…take what you do seriously!
Laugh at yourself first, you'll take the bite out of others doing so for you.
You're always a winner if you lose with a smile.
Go tell your mother she wants you.
Any fights, I win!
That's the best way I know to put out an eye!
You could drive a wooden man nuts!
In MY day......
Eat it! It will grow hair on your chest!
Don't forget to check your oil.
If your friend jumped off a bridge would you?
If I didn't love you so much I wouldn't punish you...
I would let you do whatever you wanted.
Stop crying or I'll give you a reason to cry.
You have things so easy!
When I was your age I had to walk to school in 10 feet of snow up hill both ways!
You're only young once.
You're gonna like it, whether you like it or not!
The early bird gets the worm. Rise and shine!
Don't look at me in that tone of voice!
How many times do I have to pound that into your head?
I'm not lost, it's just over the next hill!
If you want to do something,
do it because you want to.
Don't do it because someone else did.
As long as you tried your hardest, that's all that matters.
What do you think this is, your birthday?
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts then we'd all have a merry Christmas.
Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.
What do you think I am, a bank?
What part of NO don't you understand?
I don't care what other people are doing! I'm not everybody elses father!
You're not leaving my house dressed like that! What will other parents think?
Could those sleeves be any longer?
You look like a bag lady!
Worrying about things you can't change is like a rocking chair...
it gives you something to do, but it doesn't get you anywhere.
Hurt much? I didn't feel a thing.
I feel for you, but I can't reach you from here.
If you're gonna be dumb, you've gotta be tough.
Didn't your teacher learn you anything?!
You can marry a rich guy just as easily as you can a poor guy.
It's hard to be good, and easy to be bad.
Don't tell on anybody unless you tell on yourself first.
Hey, did you hear me talking to you?
I'm not watching television. I'm resting my eyes.
Don't use that tone with me!
Am I talking to a brick wall?
If I catch you doing that one more time, I'll...
Act your age.
Two wrongs do not make a right.
Wipe your feet!
Enough is enough!
Don't make me stop the car!
What did I just get finished telling you?
You know you're always gonna to be Daddy's little girl
